Things To Consider When You Find Out You’re Expecting! (Part I)

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

So you just found out you’re expecting! This exciting time can also be very overwhelming. There are so many considerations and decisions that need to be made before your new family member makes an appearance. It’s hard to know what questions to ask – much less know what the answers are! We thought we would take some time to mention a few things that every new parent needs to think about. This week we’ll discuss Diapering, Sleeping and Carrying!

*Diapering. What kind of diapers do you feel will best meet your needs and the needs of your family? How often are you able to do laundry? How important is sustainability in your decision? Do you have a history of allergies or skin sensitivities in your family that you think may be passed on to your baby?

*green tip* Claudia’s Choices and other phosphate-free hypoallergenic detergents are not only for cloth diapers. In fact, many of our customers say that their whites have neverbeen brighter when using these detergents on their everyday laundry!

*Sleeping. What kind of sleeping option would you like to choose? Do you feel more comfortable co-sleeping? Or do you feel that a crib would be more beneficial for you and your baby? Another option that an increasing number of parents are choosing is a baby hammock which allows the baby to sleep alone, but conforms to their small shape and can be easily rocked or swayed to sooth the baby. Is this something that you might consider?

*Carrying. How would you prefer to carry your baby? Some people prefer a more structured carrier while others like the closeness that a wrap or sling provides. Another consideration is who is likely to be using the carrier – some come in sizes which may not fit all of the caretakers in a baby’s life. Is this something that may be an issue for you?

Next week – Strolling and Driving!

What other considerations do new parents need to think about? What was the most important consideration for you personally? (Or the most surprising?) We’d love to hear from you!

Cloth Diapering

Friday, January 15th, 2010

Did you know that in Canada we throw out 4 million disposable diapers a day?! Isn’t that an astonishing number? It is easy to help reduce this amount of waste by choosing to cloth diaper your child. Cloth diapering has wonderful environmental benefits! For example, not only do you help keep disposables out of the landfill, but you also save 300 lbs of wood by cloth diapering one baby! Beyond the environmental concerns, however, cloth diapering can also make a difference to your pocketbook. Whereas disposable diapers can cost you over $3000 for one child, you can cloth diaper your little one for as little as $400.

At Stylin Mama, Baby & Tot, we carry a wide selection of cloth diapers, guaranteed to meet any preference and budget!

For example, Applecheeks is one of our most popular brands. These diapers are designed and manufactured in Montreal, Quebec, Canada! Applecheeks diaper covers come in two sizes and a variety of bright and beautiful colours. The inserts are available in hemp and bamboo, two exceptionally absorbent materials.

Grobaby is a line of organic cotton diapers with inserts that snap in to ensure that nothing is sliding around where it is not supposed to! Grobaby diapers come in one size which can be expanded to fit your growing baby!

And with one of our newest diaper lines, Flip Diapers (made by Bum Genius), you can use cloth diapers even on those occasions that make cloth diapering particularly difficult. Flip diapers have a reusable outer shell, with the option of using cloth or disposable inserts. It’s the perfect solution to travelling with a little one without having to revert to using disposable diapers. Just throw in a disposable insert in your Flip Diaper and you’re good to go.

And of course we carry other brands as well – Bummis, AMP, Bum Genius and even Econobum, (the cloth diapering solution for those who are on a tight budget)! Stop by one of our locations and our knowledgeable staff will be happy to help you find the right diaper for your little one!
