Favourite Places to Visit in New Brunswick – Part 2

June 6th, 2011

The first long weekend has come and gone with barely any sunshine in sight, but summer is finally starting to show signs it exists. Here are a few other great places to check out this summer with your family and friends:

Kings Landing

www.kingslanding.nb.ca

Step back into the 1800’s; New Brunswick style! Kings Landing Historical Settlement is nestled along the Saint John River Valley and depicts the transformation of history-rich New Brunswick in the 19th century.

Over 70 historic buildings are settled on the land, complete with historic artifacts, furniture, equipment and tools. Stop by the King’s Head Inn for authentic 1855 diner fare, the bakery to enjoy soups, sandwiches and according to their website, cinnamon buns that are to die for, or the Prince William Ice Cream Parlour for a refreshing treat.

Check out their Heritage Workshops all summer including flax processing, open hearth baking and wool processing. Group tours are available as well as wedding packages!

With many events and re-enactments planned for the 2011 season including on Father’s Day weekend Cheval to Chevrolet / Carriages and Antique Cars, why not pick up a season pass for $95 which includes unlimited admission for you and 3 guests for 12 months? Kings Landing will surely be a family favorite this summer!

New River Beach

506-755-4042

Just 40km west of Saint John New River Beach offers campgrounds, volleyball courts, bird watching, guided nature walks and hiking trails to name a few. Known for its annual sand sculpting contests, it has long sandy beaches and breath-taking scenery.

Open mid-May to mid-October, it’s a great place to take the kids for a day, or even weekend!

Butterfly World

www.butterflyworld.ca

I’ve driven by this a few times while I was in Moncton and have always wanted to go in. And looking at their website, I’ve decided I’m going to go for sure this summer!

Opening June 30th, Butterfly World is located in Moncton across the street from Magnetic Hill in Moncton, NB. It features an enclosed garden that is home to hundreds of exotic free flying butterflies, plus and indoor garden that is always in bloom. This is a great place to take the kids for an educational, and fun, day trip.

They have 20-30 varieties of Butterflies with their main supplies coming from Niagara, United Kingdom and Costa Rica. At one time, they try and keep over 300 in the garden so you’ll want to bring your camera!

In addition to butterflies and indoor gardens, they also have a park complete with a ball cage and a bouncy house. The end of the season at Butterfly World  this year is September 3rd, so make sure you stop by at least once!

Do you have any other place that I have not mentioned that you love to take your kids?

Favourite Places to Visit in New Brunswick – Part 1

April 3rd, 2011

It’s almost that time of year… the time of year that you start to plan the summer vacation. And whether you have children or not, you’re still looking for a place that is as relaxing as it is full of activities.

There are many places right here in New Brunswick that are a great mixture of both. For example:

Rockwood Park

www.RockwoodPark.ca

Known in Saint John for its duck pond, it also features horse stables, a golf course, campground and the Cherry Brook zoo, so you can see why it’s one of the largest urban parks in North America.

Stop by here to see tons of wildlife, feed the ducks and take your dog for a walk along one of the many trails. From the stables you can book trail rides, carriage rides and riding lessons among other activities.

The campground offers 2200 acres, dumping stations, shelters, hot showers and restrooms, laundry facilities, full serviced sites, semi-serviced and unserviced sites.

Fundy National Park

http://www.fundyweb.com/fundy/

Fundy is a personal favourite of mine. My boyfriend and I go 3-4 times in the summer months, even braving it towards the end of August! With 3 campsites, hundreds of walking trails, kayaking, canoeing, swimming and golfing to name a few, it never grows old.

Nestled along the Bay of Fundy close to a small fisherman village called Alma, this is a fantastic place to vacation. Not into camping? There is a motel, hotel, an inn and a Bed and Breakfast.

Want to walk on the ocean floor? Check the tide schedule to make it possible.

Hundreds of walking, hiking and biking trails make up the surrounding area. No matter what your expertise they have trails suited for you. Make sure you pick up a trail map at an information kiosk. This will tell you the difficulty of each trail and what to expect for wildlife and scenery along it. And don’t forget to check out Dickson Falls!

After all that hiking, you’re sure to get hungry! Drive in to the town of Alma and grab some fish and chips at the dairy bar, or how about lobster stuffed chicken? Are you a fan of the Soprano’s? Stop by Saprano’s for some pizza and great gangster décor!

Magic Mountain

www.magicmountain.ca

Camping and hiking not for you? How about 8 water slides? Ranging from gentle to thrilling, you’ll find one that is right for you.

Atlantic Canada’s largest water park is location in Moncton, NB and is very family friendly. Known for the Kamikaze slide that is more than one hundred feet long and nearly a vertical drop, you’ll reach speeds o up to 60 kilometers per hour!

Is the Kamikaze too scary for you (me too!)? Try the Sidewinder with gentle turns and drops, it’s a great way to cool off, but still exciting.

Magic Mountain is not just water slides. They also offer tubing and matting, plus slides just for kids. Mini golf, an arcade, lots of food and a gift shop are great ways to stay dry.

What is your favorite place to visit in New Brunswick?

Cloth Diapering – Do you have buildup?

November 5th, 2010

Are your cloth diapers not as absorbent as they once were? Or even smell a bit funky?

Have you tried stripping them?

No matter how perfectly you follow the care instructions, buildup can still occur. If your diapers are repelling, stinky or just are not absorbing like they used to, follow these easy instructions on how to strip them:

1.Using a phosphate free detergent like Claudia’s Choices or Rockin’ Green is a great way to know that there will be no residue left behind on your diapers.
2.Prepare a wash with the recommended amount of detergent for all your covers, flats and inserts. Run them through one hot wash with the detergent.
3.Run them through 3-4 more hot washes (no need to dry in between) with NO detergent.
4.We recommend hanging your covers to dry (elastics will last much longer and there is no risk of snaps or Velcro breaking), but all inserts and flats may be tumble-dried on medium or hot.
If you follow these easy instructions, your diapers will be good as new in no time!

Dannielle @ Stylin’ Mama, Baby & Tot

Did you know that we offer FREE in store cloth diapering classes?

Summer Safety

June 14th, 2010

Well, the season is almost upon us! The days are getting warmer and the sun is shining! This is the time of year many of us have been looking forward to all winter! Picnics, boating, barbecues, trips to the park and more. But for those of us with babies and children, the summer season brings with it a whole new variety of concerns. So with that in mind, here are a few recommendations for keeping little ones as safe and comfortable as possible!

  • Sun protection
    • Keep babies and little ones in the shade as much as possible
    • Try to limit exposure between 11:00am and 4:00pm when UV rays are strongest
    • Help shade face and eyes with a wide brimmed hat
    • Protect delicate eyes with sunglasses with UV protection
    • Put them in bathing suits with UV protection to protect from harmful UV rays
    • Use a sunscreen with SPF 30+ for babies 6 months and up
      • You can test on a small area first to check for allergic reactions
      • Many parents prefer natural sunscreens to limit their children’s exposure to chemicals
  • Hydration
    • Nursing babies may need to nurse more frequently
    • Get kids in the habit of drinking more fluids – pack water in reusable bottle and bring it with you to the park, etc.
    • Sports drinks are good but contain a lot of sugar so be wary
    • Be a good role model – caregivers need to drink more fluids in the summer too!
  • Bug repellent
    • The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends not using any insect repellents on a baby who’s not yet 2 months old
    • Dressing your baby in light-colored clothing that covers as much of his skin as possible will help protect him from insects that bite or sting. Avoid bright or dark colors or flowery prints.
    • Many bug repellents contain Deet as their main ingredient. Because Deet  is an insecticide that can enter the bloodstream, many parents prefer to use natural bug repellents

Do you have any summer tips that help keep your children happy and comfortable? What works for you?
